This year we trialled a new format for the Midland Meeting at Coxmoor, replacing the previous team event in groups of four with a Pairs Better Ball Stableford competition. 29 members and one guest took part on another warm but breezy day, with firm, fast-running fairways and Coxmoor's usual excellent greens. 

Nearest the pin prizes were awarded on four of the Par 3s, with the winners each receiving a sleeve of balls: Graham Pearson (2nd), Alan Mathers (7th), Phil Gough (10th), Mick Ford (17th).

Scoring was generally good under the better-ball format, with only one group scoring less than 30 points and only 8 points separating the winners from the group in 14th place. David Taylor and his guest, Roger Leighton, took 3rd place on countback, with 38 points, Mick Roche and Ian Wood were 2nd on 39 points and the winners were Phil Gough, making full use of his home club advantage, and new member Ian Barclay, on 40 points.

The team at Coxmoor again looked after us very well and we look forward to returning for next year's meeting, which will be on Wednesday 4th August.

A team of 10 RAFGS members assembled at Rye Golf Club on a sunny but not too hot day for our annual match against the club. Unfortunately the club's match manager had only managed to find two players including himself, but after discussion between the two match managers, it was agreed to play the match in the usual foursomes format, with one RAFGS player joining a Rye player in the first two groups and the last group being made up of four RAFGS players, with two nominally representing the club. We were able to mix up the teams in the afternoon, such that the two Rye players had the opportunity to meet and play with a good number of the RAFGS players.

With a pleasant breeze helping to take the edge off the temperature, we enjoyed an excellent day's golf over the links - not to mention the usual excellent lunch between the morning and afternoon rounds. The match at Rye is one of our most prestigious and enjoyable events and  match manager Kevin Burston will liaise with the Club Secretary to try and ensure that next year's event is rather more evenly matched.

The Championship Meeting was on 22 July was again held over the two courses at Moor Park Golf Club. Despite the recent hot weather, the event was well supported with 29 members and 4 guests taking part,

Following the traditional tea/coffee and bacon rolls on arrival, the morning round was held over the High Course, with a two tee start enabling all of our players to get off before the club member's roll-up. Despite the medal format everyone got round in good time and had time to relax over a chips and sandwiches lunch. All of the competitors started at the 1st tee of the West Course for their afternoon round and clearly continued to support the request for 'ready golf', with everyone again completing their rounds in good time. We were delighted to  be joined by our President, Sir Roger Palin, who played the afternoon round and had kindly agreed to present the prizes.

Both courses were in very good condition and a tribute to the work of the greens staff in managing the challenge of the dry and frequently hot weather over the summer.

The results reflected the challenges of the conditions, with only three scratch scores under 80 and 5 players failing to complete the two medal rounds. Matt Branowsky had an outstanding day, being the clear winner of the Challenge Cup with his scores of 76 and 71, for a total of 147, six clear of Paul Dickinson - also a currently serving member - on a total of 153. The scoring for the Handicap Cup was much closer, although Matt's net total of 145 was enough for him to win the Handicap Cup, 2 shots clear of Gordon Varley and with Paul Dickinson a further shot behind in 3rd place.

Paddy Mournian, 3rd in the overall Scratch, won the Veteran's Scratch Cup with his total of 164, while Gordon Varleyn finished two shots clear of Kevin Huish in the Veteran's Handicap competition. Finally, Denis Virgo's won the India Trophy (Senior Veterans) with his net 158.

The popular fixture against Brokenhurst Manor in the New Forest was as usual over-subscribed, giving Match Manager Phil Sperring a difficult task in selecting the team of 12. Unfortunately Phil was unable to play in the match, but Andrew Curtis kindly agreed to step in as Captain on the day. Both did an excellent job, as Phil's report indicates:

"On yet another cloudless day with temperatures above 30 degrees, the RAF GS team turned up at Brokenhurst Manor GC  to compete once again for the Adastral Trophy.   Given the weather conditions of late, the course was in excellent condition and the match was played in great spirit.  Following two consecutive 5 -1 defeats, the RAF GS team under the leadership of Andrew Curtis, who stood in at short notice, was able to overturn the trend and seize a memorable 4 - 2 victory (this would probably not have happened if I had been able to play!).  My thanks to everyone."
