A good field of 24 golfers met at Sandy Lodge for our final event of the year, the Winter Meeting, where we compete for the Roses Bowl. Our Secretary of course claimed the credit for the fact that the meeting took place on the first fine day following the two named storms of the previous Thursday and Saturday.
The tasty bacon rolls provided additional. and necessary nourishment following what had been, in some cases, challenging journeys to the club, after which most of the players made use of the first class practice facilities before their round. Despite fairway watering, the course was showing signs of the summer drought, with widespread bare patches and extensive overseeding on some of the holes, but as usual the tees and greens were in very good condition.
There was some good scoring although, unusually, it was mainly the lower handicapped players who seemed to struggle with the conditions. The prize-giving took place during the two-course lunch that followed the golf and the full results are at the link below,
There were four Nearest the Pin prizes at the 3rd, 8th, 15th and 18th holes, with the respective winners Joe Bains, Stu Butler, Nigel Dowdall and Dennis Virgo. In the individual Stableford competition, Farroukh Bajwa took first place with 36 points, Phil Sperring was second on 35 points and also took the trophy as the leading Full Member, and Roger Carr was third on countback from Rod Powell, Pete Hamilton and Stu Butler, all on 33 points.
Sandy Lodge is a great venue for our the final event in our season and we look forward to returning there on 21 October 2027.
